Chinese then pay attention to the placement and architecture of things to optimize the flow of this energy. The art (or science) of this practice is called "FengShui" (Wind-Water).
FengShui is very important in modern Chinese architecture and design. Here are an example:
This building in Hongkong optimizes the flow of FengShui by having a big square hole in the middle of the construction:Modern science is recently catching up with this concept with all the fields theories (e.g. electromagnetic fields ).

The hole thing is ...
I don't know the reason is for Feng-Shui before
Feng-Shui has another name called "geomancy",it includes "house geomancy","office-store geomancy" and "geomancy of grave" etc......
I heard in some schools, they have courses about "geomancy";in a university this year in China, they have courses named " Architecture and Geomancy".
a friend of mine who studied architect in australia, told me that they do have fengshui courses in the university (not a small one). it is deemed at ancient wisdom for the building. for example, thou shall not have a toilet infront of the door of your house. in ancient time, the toilet is a separate building and is extremely smelly. that makes sense then. i thought it makes sense even in the modern days. another famous example is that you should not have a mirror in front of your bed (or tv). don't you think it's scary when you wake up at night? :-)
almost all casinos in modern days designed their buildings according to fengshui laws. regardless the owner is a chinese or not.
